The Mystic Press of Mystic, CT, ran a series in 1896 about the local inhabitants who were of royal descent. This is one from the series, and it has reappeared fairly often here and there. Since this royal line comes down through the John Lake who married Margaret Reade (No. 30 below), an 8th great grandfather of Winfield
Dyer Gallup, it would be a royal line for Winfield if true; unfortunately, it probably is not. Exactly where the newspaper people found their information is unknown but presumably it came from the descendants themselves as it is unlikely that the newspaper was doing any genealogical research. While the Lake family of New London County had long claimed they were of royal descent, this particular royal line has since been rejected for lack
of evidence that the Lakes of Essexshire were in any way connected with the Lakes of Erby. But rejection is not refutation. Lack of corroborating evidence does not alone refute a genealogical contention; the required evidence might some day be found. Equally possible, refuting evidence might be found. For now, this particular Gallup royal ancestry is simply not taken seriously by the community of professional
genealogists.
