Notes:
John was a man of some note in Barnstable as he was often engaged in town affairs, was an Ensign in the Militia Company and Officer of Honor.
Notes:
Samuel Hinckley's year of birth is sometimes reported as 1587 instead of 1589 and his birthplace is variously reported as being Tenterden or Hawkhurst but as these towns were only about ten miles apart he might have been born somewhere between them. He came to New England following his former pastor, Rev. John Lothrop (see note for this famous man), on the ship "Hercules" in March 1634/5, accompanied by his wife Sarah, four of his children (unnamed), and 96 others bound for America. He settled first in Scituate, MA, together with about half of his fellow passengers from the Hercules. He built a home there with Rev. Lothrop called "No. 19" but sometime between 1638 and 1640 the Hinckleys again followed Rev. Lothrop to Barnstable, MA, where the family is prominent to this day.
Notes:
The place of birth for Thomas has also been reported as Egerton, Kent, England and Ashford, Kent England. (See note for his father, Rev. John Lothrop.)
Notes:
Robert and Katherine are recorded as having five additional children named Stephen, Margaret, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary. Little more is known about them.
Katherine Leese or Leise (Mrs. Robert Hinckley)
Notes:
She was the widow of Thomas Leese of Throwley, Kent. She was not mentioned in the will of her second husband, having died before him, and her maiden name is not known.
Notes:
John Hynckleye is recorded as having descended from a John Henkele, born about 1435 in Lenham, Kent, England and his wife Margaret (or Marjorie) through their son Robert and his wife Johane.
Notes:
A number of compilers have assigned the surname "Bills" to Johane and given as their source a Broderbund genealogical resource CD Vol. 5, Tree #3844. I checked this CD and found no such person, and Tree 3844 is that of a completely unrelated family. The contention appears to be totally bogus.
