Martha (Mrs. Benjamin Lothrop)

Notes:
Martha's surname has been recorded as "Goodwife" but this was probably an approbation confused as a surname.

John Lothrop Jr. (2nd)

Notes:
A John Lothrop was admitted as an inhabitant of the 2nd rank at Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts in 1672. If this John is the same as the one recorded there, he probably did not remain long there since his children are all recorded in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
John was a man of note among the seafaring men of the coast of Connecticut and Massachusetts. He sailed as captain in command of his own ship based on this record from New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut:
"These certify I received on board of ye Swan, John Lothrop, Mstr., 8 bbls. pork, 48 bush. wheat of Sam'l Hemingway of New Haven, for use of Capt. Elisha Hutchinson of Boston, and doe promis to deliver ye same on paying freight 3s. d. per bbl. and 6d, bush. Apr. 1, 1691. [signed] Jo. Lothrop."
John's will dated March 9, 1726/1727 was probated February 9, 1727/1728 naming as his legatees his wife Hannah; son John's son, Joseph; the children of his daughter Mary Lothrop Howland, and those of his daughter Elizabeth Lothrop Lewis; and his sons Barnabas, and Benjamin. His son Barnabas and his wife Hannah were executors.
There is disagreement as to whether his last three children (Bathshua, Phebe & Benjamin) were by his first wife, Mary Cole, or his second, Hannah Morton.
