Notes:
Bradbury was a 2nd great grand uncle of Winfield Gallup. The notes I found for him tell us something about the location and movements of the Dyer family. The Dyer Cemetery, still in excellent condition on State Rd 443 at the foot of Dyer Rd in E. Berne, NY, mainly contains the graves of Bradbury's family. His grave has the Masonic Emblem on it.
Bradbury came with his mother and father from Sturbridge MA in 1806 (age 14) to Jefferson, NY but in 1809 the family returned east about 35 or 40 miles to Berne/Knox, NY, area where they bought the Van Vranken farm. Bradbury first appeared in the 1820 US Census in Berne, NY, but his father, James, appears there in the 1810 census so Bradbury was either missed in the 1810 Berne census or stayed behind somewhere until his father was established on the new place. In the 1850 Berne census, Bradbury was a farmer with real estate valued at $3000, and an Andrew Williams age 15 was living with them and attending school.
Notes:
Year of death not readable in gravestone picture.
Notes:
"Samuel Dyer was the eldest son of Samuel Dyer by his second wife, Mary -----. He was born in Boston, Mass on May 20, 1695 and was baptized in the 2nd Old North Church there on May 25 1695. This was the Church his father and family attended as well as his uncles Henry and Barrett Dyre. The family removed about 1699/1700 to Bristol R.I. where other children were born and apparently he eventually removed to North Kingstown, R.I. where the births of his seven children were recorded. Unfortunately, the Town Records were badly scorched in a fire which occurred in the Town Hall, and parts of them are indecipherable - in this case only the dates of birth remaining, the names being obliterated. The writer [William Allan Dyer] in company with Col. H. Anthony Dyer of Providence examined these records in hope of finding some trace of the names but this was in vain. Our visit was made on May 22, 1940. Nevertheless by a process of checking and eliminating we believe we can say with a reasonable assurance that his children are those indicated below..... these names are those of members of the family secured from marriage records of Newport." [The names and dates reported are those used in this compilation.]
Notes:
Thus far, there seems to be no record giving the surname of Samuel (3) Dyer's wife.
Notes:
"Marcy" is believed to be Sybil's surname from her former marriage. Her maiden name is unknown.
Notes:
Samuel was probably born in Boston where he lived with his first wife although there is mention by some compilers of this family that he was born in Newport, RI. He lived in Boston and Bristol, RI, with his second wife, Mary Cotta. She was the widow of Hugh Sampson by whom she had sons Jeremiah & Hugh Sampson. [Torrey & NEHGR, 145,1991,262 and THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST; ; Vol 22 #4; pp210-218]
[From the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island] - Samuel Dyer was a carpenter. On October 5, 1687 he was a resident of Boston when he sold to Charles Dyer of Newport, for L200, certain land in Newport, with house, orchard, etc., excepting a third part thereof laid out unto Mrs. Katherine Dyer, by order of Town Council of Newport in 1681, at right of dower. All the aforesaid land is now or was lately in occupation of Charles Dyer, and is bounded by land now or lately in possession of Henry Dyer.
[From Rhode Island Vital Records, New Series, Vol. II; Stones in Common Burial Ground, Newport, pg. 143-144] - Samuel's gravestone was badly broken but records his death as 15 July 1724 at age 59y which calculates to a birth year of about 1665. Mary, wife of Samuel Dyre, d. 2 Apr 1729 age 62y, calculating to a birth year of 1667.
According to NEHGR Vol 145, Samuel was a housewright, of Boston, in 1687 when he sold land in Newport, and of Newport in 1722/23. His spouse and children are given in THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST; Vol 22 #4; pp210-218; and so have they been compiled herein.
Notes:
She may have married John Thorning son of Anthony & Sarah (Courser) Thorning. He born 26 May 1695, Boston, MA
