From "The Groton Avery Clan" Pgs. 80-102 (paraphrased): Like his father, James Avery, Jr. took an important part in the affairs of the colony. He took the oath of freeman on 14 Oct 1669. He was several times elected as selectman of Groton and also justice of the peace. He was first called Ensign Oct. 1662; Lieut., New London Train Band May 1665. Deputy (New London) to Conn. Leg. May 1659, Oct. 1660, 10, 1661, May 1664, Oct. 1664, (and many more times the last being Oct. 1677); Judge (New London) Oct.1663, 1644-1670 incl., 1674-1677 incl.; Second Military Officer, New London Co.
